Internet and AdvertisingA lot of people who are new to internet marketing fail to realize that there are an extremely large amount of ways to generate traffic to their website. Many people only tap into once source of traffic. There are two categories. Those who go for the cheapest, which is also the most competitive and complex. I am talking about straight up organic SEO ( Search Engine Optimization ). Fighting for the top spot in google search results can be difficult, time consuming, and quite technical.

Others will tap into the potential of internet and advertising by using Google Adwords. This is the most common form of advertising available, and unfortuneatly everyone has jumped onto this badwagon, therefore causing it to become one of the most expensive ways. This method is also known as SEM ( Search Engine Marketing ). This method is much less complex, and easier to do, however is more prone to risk due to the difficulty of pulling out a positive ROI if not done correctly.

There are 4 areas which are still an untapped area, and hold a huge area of opportunity for taking.

Facebook advertising

Facebook has become a common name in today’s society. People all around the world are using it. Even your grandma! It now generates up to 5x the amount of traffic each day of even Google! Now it has truly become an extremely intelligent platform for advertising. Why is that?

For one, the platform is currently much cheaper than Google adwords. Not everyone fully realized the potential, and therefore there is less competition.

What is even MORE exciting is the fact that now you can specifically target down to the exact customer who you would like to reach. You are able to single out exact keywords mentioned in their profiles, their gender, age, location. All of these things are possible with the immense amount of information that Facebook provides.

What is cool is that you can use images to catch peoples attention, in addition to words unlike Google Adwords. There are many ways of utilizing Facebook ads currently. Some will link back to an internal fan page to grow their fan base. Others will go straight to an information or squeeze page.

I believe that Facebook will be the new gold rush in these coming years. I suggest you grab your seat at the table while the meal is hot.

YouTube Traffic buying

Whoa what? Okay this is a bit of an underground method. I guarantee that only a select few are aware of this one. What do I mean by YouTube traffic buying? Well first let’s examine YouTube. Similar to Facebook, YouTube also is known to generate even more traffic than Google in many cases. Video is literally exploding and changing the way information is spread across the web. Gone are the days where people are used to only reading their information from long blocks of text on the web.

It is much easier to sit back and let somebody spill their words and entertain them while watching a video. Some videos can generate MASSIVE daily traffic. Many of the people who have created these videos do not realize the potential of tapping into this constant traffic stream.

Look I am not talking about trying to create a viral video in hopes that YOU can get massive traffic from it. Not that it would be a bad idea. It just isn’t as easy as it sounds. Here is the thing that I am talking about: Contacting the owners of the videos which are receiving all of this traffic, and offering to buy their account from them.

Uhh, wait isn’t that against the YouTube ToS? Well sure, but hey who is going to tattle on you? I did say this was an “underground” strategy didn’t I? Look, 9 times out of 10 these people are more than willing to accept 200 or 300 dollars for an account which gets around 50,000+ views. Once you get it, you can post up a link to your opt-in page or sales page and begin converting that traffic into pure profit.

I won’t go into massive detail on the strategy here, but I will say this: There is a huge potential in doing this method! What do you have to lose?

Cell Phone Ads

Oh this one DEFINITELY isn’t on a lot of people’s todo list yet. Smart phones are exploding all over the place. Soon you it will be very rare to find anyone who does not have one. With that brings multiple apps, websites, and fast visual touch features etc. I won’t go into that but I will say that you will start seeing ads all over the place in cell phones and the targeting is only going to get better and better. Right now you can already see the ads showing up in many of the free apps that you can download.

One of the ones that has caught my attention is a service called ‘AdMob’. You can get clicks for literally only .03 – .04 cents! That is REDICULOUS! You can sign up and begin showing ads on iPhones and Android phones with as little as 50 dollars. I believe it is truly worth checking out. Just make sure your landing page is cell phone friendly!

Banner Ads

Ah good ol’ banner ads. We have all seen banner ads all over the internet. If not, where have you been? Geez! Well these can come in many forms. Whether it be the little square box format, or the longer skyscraper ads, well placed and designed banner ads are a solid form of generating traffic.

The reason this method works so well, is that many people just aren’t using it. Many large web sites are looking to sell ad space on their website. These people are on a commission basis and they are losing money if they can not get the space sold.

All it takes is a bit of negotiating. NEVER accept the “list” price that you are given when contacting these websites. Just be honest with them when they try to hit you with a big number. Say, “Hey look, I am not Coca Cola. Work with me here.” The idea is to get across to them that you would like to give them a try and see how it works for you, and then become a big spender in the future.

This isn’t telling a mis truth, as I am sure that if it DID work out for you, you certainly wouldn’t mind spending the money, seeing as how it is actually generating more for you in returns.

Small Business Email MarketingEmail marketing can be one of the most powerful tools for a small business to keep in contact with prospects, build relationships, and increase conversions. If you aren’t doing it, that would definitely be a huge mistake, however let’s assume that you are in some form or another. Here are 5 of the mistakes that I have seen which are causing your email marketing to not return the results you desire.

1. Not sending regular content

In order to stay on your customers radar, you must continue to provide regular content. What is the best amount to email your prospect? Well, that is a tough question to answer. It all depends on your niche. A good “magic number” to shoot for would be 3 per week. You may have to venture slightly off of the beaten path with the content that you mail out. Your e-mails may even be quite short ( That isn’t always a bad thing ). What you want is constant exposure to your client. Always be on the front of their minds, especially on the verge of a product launche.

You don’t have to always be creating daily content either. Take some time to sit down and write out an entire auto-responder series. You can create a series of 10-12 articles and have it work on auto-pilot for you. AWeber makes this all very simple.

2. Trying to sell in every newsletter

This is something that a lot of  people seem to have a hard time trying to grasp. It is important that you don’t try to be stingy with all of your content. The best thing to do is give away all of your best stuff. Now, some people may say, “WHAAAAT!? If I give away my best stuff, then why would anyone want to buy from me?”

The answer is this: If your customer sees all of the great content that you are giving away and is getting value from it they will think, “WOW! If this is the stuff that they are giving away for FREE, then I can’t wait to see what they are selling!” Ahhh, did you just get an ah-hah moment there?

Mix it up in your series. A good formula to work on is to send out 1 “sales” newsletter for every 3 “content” newsletters. You can also experiment with half and half as well. It also wouldn’t be a bad idea to mix in topics that are closely related which promote your affiliates. Win – Win if you are able to get JV partners to cross promote with you!

3. Not linking back to your website

I see a lot of newsletters that put all of the content right inside of the email itself. While this works well for the most part, you are really missing out on a lot of opportunity. When you link back to your website, you have much more control over what the customer sees. Your website contains links to  other articles, and products by you. It has your logo posted all around, opt-ins, and affiliate links.

Not only that, but having the “good stuff” that you were going to post inside of the email on a physical static page allows people to send it virally to their friends! Be sure to have your opt-in form easily accessible from this content page that you send people to, and watch your opt-in numbers soar!

4. Improper use of headlines

Why is the headline of an email so important? Well, if you are anything like me then you may have noticed that your email box is generally filled with a very large amount of information. If the headline doesn’t catch my attention it is quickly deleted and never read. Can you relate? Now imagine if you had read the headline that you are sending to your customers. Would you read it, or would it go in the trash? Hmm, something to think about.

The entire point of the headline is to get the first sentence of the article read. The purpose of the first sentence is to get the rest of the article read. The purpose of the article is to get your customer to take action. Are you following me?

5. Lack of testing

With all of the great technology that we have at our desposal, it is extremely easy to test out various headlines, article structures, etc. Don’t just read what I have to say here, test it out for yourself! If you are using AWeber for your business email marketing software ( /slap on the wrist if you are not ) then it is not very hard to split up a certain number of your email list and send one portion headline A, and another portion headline B. Which one gets opened more? Okay, send that out to the rest of your list. Ahh, Dun da dunnn! That wasn’t hard.

So, what are you going to do to correct your email marketing mistakes and take your small business to the next level?
